Luckily there are ways to filter and make water safe to use and drink without having rely on modern technology. One such method as portrayed in the 100+ year old book “Household Discoveries and Mrs. Curtis’s Cookbook” is to use a Vinegar Barrel or an oak tub and layer it with canvas, pebbles, sand, gravel and Charcoal.

It suggests that water for gardening be left unfiltered, but for household use, the instructions contained in the book offer a cheap and easy way to filter your rainwater.
